The Current State of Shroud Research

I would love to report that Shroud research has made great progress in recent years, but that would be grossly overstating the case. There is still research being conducted in the United States by STURP cofounder John Jackson and his research group at the Turin Shroud Center in Colorado Springs. Some excellent work is being done in Italy by Paolo Di Lazzaro and his research team at the ENEA Center in Frascati, and they have published a long list of scientific papers in recent years. Giulio Fanti in Padua also continues to conduct experiments and publish on various aspects of the Shroud.

There is also the private, international online Shroud Science Group (SSG) with around 120 members composed of Shroud scholars from around the world. Unfortunately, they are primarily a discussion group, and aside from one paper coauthored jointly by around twenty of their members ten years ago, they have not really advanced the science in any significant way as a group. I should note that all the individual researchers I mentioned above are also members of the SSG.

Of course, there is the International Study Center on the Shroud (CISS) in Turin, the oldest Shroud research organization in the world. They continue to study the Shroud and work closely with the Ateneo Pontificio Regina Apostolorum (Pontifical University) in Rome to educate new Shroud scholars and researchers by offering accredited courses onsite and online in both Italian and English. The CISS holds annual meetings where scholars come together to share information and evaluate new research.

There are still many other international Shroud research organizations, in Spain, France, Portugal, England, Norway, Poland, Mexico, Panama, Peru, etc., and many dedicated Shroud researchers around the world. Every few years, a Shroud conference is held somewhere in the world where scholars can attend and share their latest work with each other. Researchers continue to study various aspects of the Shroud’s science and history, but, again, without making any truly significant progress.

All of these researchers, and Shroud studies in general, suffer from the same problem. No new data has been made available in forty years, and there is a real limit to how much more can be extracted from the forty-year-old data STURP collected. The fact that it has been used by so many for so long certainly attests to the quality of their original work, but everything has its limits. In the realm of Shroud science, that limit has been reached, which results in a lot of repetition and rehashing of earlier research without much real forward progress being made.

To make matters worse, countless theories are now posted online in blogs and videos by unqualified researchers that are mostly expressing their personal opinions without any credible scientific basis, adding to the already vast, often confusing, and frequently erroneous information that is available to the public. I have written several editorials warning people not to use YouTube videos, blog sites, and television documentaries as their basis for Shroud studies, but to little avail. Television is primarily an entertainment medium.
